What a great place to shoot, Scott for your project... the big steel in these tools conveys just the right look I had in mind. When I brought your bottom image into Photoshop, I found it displayed more open values and wasn't as dark and contrasty... interesting! That tells me that the blog display is messing a bit with the color space.
The bottom one is very strong due to the internal coherence of the shapes and the quality of the design... See how the light background in the top one destroys the illusion a bit as the background is distracting and draws the viewer's eye away from the focal point. The more you can do like the bottom one, the stronger the portfolio will be...
